Mystery Crochet Along 2012 - #2 Valentine's Edition

Starting January 23, 2012 our page, http://www.LetsCrochet.com/, will be hosting our 2nd mystery crochet along for the year 2012.

HOW THIS WORKS:
Each day I will post the first few steps of a pattern. The next day a couple more steps will be posted, and so on and so on until it's complete. When it's over everyone who participated can email your photos to have your photos posted on the the blog.
It will be interesting to see how everyone's project turns out especially since you have no idea what you're making. (not at first, anyways!)
Please invite all of your friend who enjoy crocheting! This should be a fun event for all.

SUPPLIES:
  • RED HEART “Shimmer”: 1 Ball (substitute for any worsted weight yarn)
  • Crochet Hook: 4mm [US G-6] and 5mm [US H-8].
  • One ¾” button, yarn needle.
  • GAUGE: 16 sc = 4”; 17 rows = 4” with larger hook. 
  • CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
  • sc2tog = [draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and 
  • draw through all 3 loops on hook.


DAY 1
With larger hook, ch 6.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 5 sts.
Rows 2-8: Work even.
Row 9-Inc: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, sc across to last st, 2 sc in last st; turn – 7 sts.


DAY 2
Rows 10-33: Repeat Rows 2-9 three times – 13 sts.
Rows 34-52: Work even


DAY 3
Row 53-Dec: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc across to last 2 sts, sc2tog;
turn – 11 sts.
Rows 54-60: Work even.



DAY 4

Rows 61-84: Repeat Rows 53-60 three times – 5 sts.
Rows 85-92: Work even.
Row 93: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, ch 1, skip
next st, sc in next 2 sts; turn. Work 3 rows even.
Next Row: Repeat above row. Work 2 rows even.




DAY 5

Ch 1, sc evenly around edge of mystery item; join to first st.
Fasten off.



With smaller hook, ch 5; join with a slip st to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch-2), [dc, ch 2] 5 times
in ring; join to 3rd ch.
Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-2
space around – 6 petals.
Round 3: Holding Round 2 forward, * sc in dc from Round
1, ch 3; repeat from * around; join.
Round 4: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, 3 tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-3
space around – 6 petals.
Round 5: Holding Round 4 forward, * sc in sc from Round
3, ch 4; repeat from * around; join.
Round 6: Ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, 5 tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-4
space around – 6 petals. Fasten off



FINISHING
Sew Flower to wide portion of project. Sew button to
end opposite of buttonholes. Weave in ends.

SUPPLIES:

  • Yarn Scraps
    • Main Color (MC) 
    • Contrast A
    • Contrast B
  • Sizes 4 mm (U.S. G or 6) and 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) crochet hooks.
  • Small quantity of black and red yarn for embroidery. 
  • 2 buttons. 
  • Stuffing (Fiber Fill).
STITCH GLOSSARY
Approx = Approximately.
Ch(s) = Chain(s).
Rep = Repeat.
Rnd(s) = Round(s).
Sc = Single crochet.
Sl st = Slip stitch.
Sp(s) =Space(s).
St(s) = Stitch(es).
Tog = Together.
Yoh = Yarn over hook.

TENSION
13 sc and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm] with 5 mm (U.S. H or 8) hook.

INSTRUCTIONS
Note: To join new color, work to last 2 loops on hook. Draw new color through last 2 loops then proceed in new color.

DAY 1
With MC and larger hook, ch 24. Join in ring with sl st into first ch, taking care not to twist ch.
1st rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each ch around. Join with sl st to first sc. 24 sc.
2nd and 3rd rnds: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
4th rnd: Ch 1. *2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 11 sc. Rep from * once. Join with sl st to first sc. 26 sc.
5th and 6th rnds: As 2nd and 3rd rnds.
7th rnd: Ch 1. *2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 12 sc. Rep from * once. Join with sl st to first sc. 28 sc.
8th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join A with sl st to first sc. Break MC.

DAY 2

9th rnd: With A, ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc.
10th rnd: Ch 1. *2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 13 sc. Rep from * once. Join with sl st to first sc. 30 sc.
11th and 12th rnds: As 2nd and 3rd rnds, joining B with sl st at end of 12th rnd. Break A.
13th rnd: With B, ch 1. *2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of next 14 sc. Rep from * once. Join with sl st to first sc. 32 sc.
14th rnd: Ch 1. Working from left to right, instead of from right to left as usual, work 1 reverse sc in each sc around. Join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off .

DAY 3

With A and smaller hook, ch 7.
1st rnd: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 4 ch. 3 sc in last ch. Working in opposite side of ch, work 1 sc in each of next 4 ch. 2 sc in last ch. Join with sl st to first sc. 14 sc.
2nd rnd: Ch 1. 2 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in each of next 3 sc. 1 sc in each of next 4 sc. 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 20 sc.
3rd rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in same sp as last sl st. 1 sc in each of next 7 sc. 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. 1 sc in each of next 8 sc. 2 sc in each of next 2 sc. Join with sl st to first sc. 24 sc.
4th rnd: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.


DAY 4
(Make 2)
With MC and smaller hook, ch 15.
1st row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each of next 13 ch. Turn. 14 sc.
2nd row: Ch 1. Draw up a loop in each of next 2 sts. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook – Sc2tog made. (Sc2tog) 6 times. Turn. 7 sts.
3rd row: Ch 1. Sc2tog. Draw up a loop in each of next 3 sts. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook – Sc3tog made. Sc2tog. Fasten off



DAY 5
Sew side ends of Day 4 together, creating a cupped shape. Sew Day 4 to Day 1/2 (one on each side).. Lightly stuff  Day 3 and sew to to the front of Day 1/2 in the middle between Day 4. With red yarn, work back stitch embroidery to form a curved line for mouth on Day 3. With black yarn, stitch two X stitches above mouth to serve as a nose. Sew 2 buttons to Day 1/2 to form eyes.
