Christmas Doll with Red Dress - Vintage Free Crochet Pattern

This free pattern originally published by The American Thread Company in Star Christmas Book, No. 83, in 1951.



  • 1 Ball of Crochet Cotton size 5
  • Steel 7 Hook
  • 8 inch doll
  • 4 small buttons
  • 1 yd. ¼ inch Black velvet Ribbon



BODICE: 

With Red ch 64, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each remaining st of ch, turn.
2nd Row. Ch 3 (counts as 1st d c), 1 d c in each remaining st, turn.
3rd Row. Same as 2nd row.
4th Row. Right Section of Back, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 10 d c, turn.
5th & 6th Rows. Ch 3, 1 d c in each st, turn.

7th Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, turn.
8th Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each st, turn.
9th Row. Ch 1, s c in next st, 1 s d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 sts, cut thread.
LEFT BACK SECTION: With wrong side of work toward you, skip 40 sts of 3rd row, attach Red in next st and work from the 4th to the 6th row of Blue and White dress, cut thread, turn.
Next Row. Attach Red in 7th st, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, turn.
Next Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts.
Next Row. Ch 3, d c in next d c, 1 s d c in next d c, s c in next st, cut thread.
CENTER FRONT: With wrong side of work toward you, attach Red in 10th free st of 3rd row, 1 d c in each of the next 21 sts, turn.
2nd & 3rd Rows. Ch 3, 1 d c in each d c, turn each row.
Next Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, turn.
Next Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each st, turn.
Next Row. Ch 1, s c in same space, s d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, cut thread leaving a length for sewing.
Leave 14 sts free at center front for neck edge, attach Red in next st, ch 3, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, turn.
Next Row. Ch 3, 1 d c in each st, turn.
Next Row. Ch 3, d c in next d c, 1 s d c in next d c, s c in next st, cut thread leaving a length. Sew shoulder seams together. With Red work a row of s c around each armhole.
SKIRT: With right side of 1st row of bodice toward you, attach Red in 1st st of starting ch, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, * 2 d c in next d c, 3 d c in next d c, repeat from * across row, turn.
2nd Row. Work a double knot st (double knot st: * draw up about a ⅜ inch loop on hook, thread over and pull through ch, s c in single loop of st, repeat from * once), skip 1 st, s c in next st, repeat from beginning across row, turn.
3rd Row. Work 3 knot sts, s c in center s c of next double knot st, * double knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, repeat from * across row, turn.
Repeat last row 4 times or desired length.
Next Row. * Draw up a ⅜ inch loop on hook, thread over and pull through ch, s c in single loop of st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, repeat from * across row, cut thread. Sew last 7 rows of skirt together.
Attach Red in 1st row of bodice at opening, working toward neck edge, s c in same space, ch 5, 2 s c in next row, * ch 5, s c in next row, s c in next row, repeat from * once, ch 5, s c in end st, cut thread. Sew buttons in position on opposite side.
COLLAR: With Red ch 55, 5 d c in 4th st from hook, * d c in next st of ch, 2 d c in next st, repeat from * across ch, turn.
2nd Row. Same as 2nd row of skirt.
3rd Row. Same as last row of skirt, cut thread. Sew in position to neck edge.
TRIM: With ribbon make a small bow and with “STAR” Six Strand Embroidery Cotton work about 11 French knots of various colors in center of bow. Take a 12 inch length of ribbon and tie around waist line of doll. Sew bow over knot as illustrated. Make another small bow for hair and place in position.

Ch 8, join to form ring.
1st Row. Ch 1, 15 s c in ring, join in ch 1.
2nd Row. * Ch 6, s c in next s c, repeat from * all around ending row with ch 2, 1 d c in same space with 1st ch 6 (16 loops).
3rd Row. * Ch 8, skip 1 loop, s c in next loop, repeat from * all around, ending row with ch 3, 1 tr c in same space with 1st ch 8.
4th Row. ** Ch 11, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, * ch 6, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, repeat from * twice, ch 10, s c in 10th st from hook, * ch 5, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, ch 1, s c in base of opposite picot, repeat from * 3 times, ch 6, s c in next loop, ch 11, sl st in 5th ch from hook for picot, ch 6, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, ch 8, s c in 8th st from hook, * ch 5, sl st in 5th st from hook for picot, ch 1, s c in base of opposite picot, repeat from * once, ch 6, s c in next loop, repeat from * * all around, join, cut thread.
